The A to Z of Identity
After hats, jackets and shirts, the latest trend is personalising socks with your initials. Once upon a time, this habit of marking clothes had a practical function. It was used to help one keep track of their garments or reclaim items stored in the cloakroom of fancy restaurants and theatres (especially at a time when everyone dressed the same).
Today, it’s more of an aesthetic quirk, a show of ownership and a way of flaunting your personality through what you wear.
Even though I do the opposite by putting my initials or acronym on shoes that someone else will wear, I can’t help but ponder the identity role of objects. How much do they define us? Do they give us character, or do we project our style onto them? And does wearing something signed by someone else scream confidence in your identity, or is it a little like giving up your creative freedom and letting fashion experts do the talking?
After a bit of thought, I realised the real difference is in choosing what you genuinely love, something that resonates with you regardless of any logo printed on it. Most importantly, it’s about making it a functional detail that completes your overall style, which is uniquely yours and impossible to replicate.
I may put my initials on ‘your shoes,’ but it’s you who walks through life with that one-of-a-kind stride that makes you who you are. In short, you bring my creations to life — not the other way around!
So thank you so much!
